Yamanbagiri, Sayo and Hasebe are sent on a mission, but end up in a different time than intended. Curious as to why they ended up there, they decide to check out the situation. As they go around, they end up saving Fujiwara Ariyoshi, a student of the great sword smith Kunihiro. Ariyoshi is convinced his master shouldn’t be wasting his time on smithing a duplicate sword. Obviously, Yamanbagiri’s self-esteem takes a hit. After they part ways with Ariyoshi, Hasebe picks a fight with Yamanbagiri, hoping it’ll force him to man up (in a way).
Sayo: “Hasebe, you’re surprisingly childish.”
Hasebe: *wasn’t listening* “…did you say something?”
Sayo: “No, it’s nothing.”
Meanwhile Nagao Akinaga, Yamanbagiri’s former master, gets possessed by a Yamamba/Yama-uba (Mountain hag) as a part of the History Retrograde Armies plan and he tries to convince the young lord of the Hojo clan, Hojo Ujinao to wage war on Toyotomi Hideyoshi, instead of sticking to his father’s wishes to use defensive strategies to protect Odawara castle.
Things happen and eventually Yamanbagiri, Sayo and Hasebe face off against Nagao Akinaga, but fall victim to his “bells” that cause doubts in their hearts. Thankfully the Saniwa has found out these precious boys ended up in the wrong time and sent a rescue party to save them. Unfortunately the rescue party can’t do much, because killing Nagao Akinaga isn’t really an option. In the end Yamanbagiri manages to kill the Yamanba (after all his name is Yamanbagiri, lit. Yamanba-cutter) and Akinaga returns to his normal self. In the meantime Ujinao has overcome his doubts on what to do and declares he’ll stick to his father’s wished to use defensive strategies.
Lastly we get this really sweet scene between Ariyoshi and Yamanbagiri, in which Ariyoshi declares he wants to smith a sword like Yamanbagiri and he’ll help his master Kunihiro to smith a masterpiece like that. (Yup, yup, they’ll smith Yamanbagiri Kunihiro!) Whether they’d be making a copy or not didn’t matter anymore.
Now we have one happy Yamanbagiri.
After this everyone goes back to the citadel to have a party, except Yamanbagiri and Sayo, who are asked by the Saniwa to stay behind and check if there aren’t any more History Retrograde soldiers lurking around. Sayo isn’t feeling really well though. The effect of Akinaga’s bells is still lingering in him, so he has the really strong need to take revenge… (and there starts Akatsuki no Dokuganryu)
